Time Zones, Culture and Communication: Making a Remote Team in Cairo Work

· 5 min read · By the Bit&Bits team

Time zones are the easy part. Here is how to set up hours, habits and a sense of belonging so your team in Cairo feels like part of your company.

A remote team in Egypt works well when three things are sorted out early: overlapping working hours, clear written communication, and a real sense that the team belongs to your company. Get those right and the distance matters far less than most people expect.

Cairo sits in a comfortable spot on the clock. It overlaps well with European working hours and is only a short step from the Gulf. The bigger questions are usually about habits, not hours. Here is what we have learned from years of running teams for clients abroad.

Time zones: more overlap than you might think

Time differences are the first worry for most companies, and usually the easiest to solve.

Your office Difference from Cairo What it means day to day
Saudi Arabia Cairo is one hour behind for most of the year Almost a full shared working day
UAE Cairo is one to two hours behind, depending on the season Most of the day overlaps
Western and Central Europe Cairo is usually one to two hours ahead Good overlap through the core of the day

Because of this, most clients can hold stand-ups, reviews and quick calls at normal times without anyone working at midnight. Dedicated staff can also work flexible hours, so if you need someone to start later to match your afternoon, or to cover a specific window for support, that can be arranged when the role is set up.

Agree on your working week and holidays

Many companies in Egypt work Sunday to Thursday, while Europe works Monday to Friday and the Gulf varies by country. For a dedicated team, what matters is your week, not ours. Decide which days your team works and write it down before day one.

It also helps to share a simple holiday calendar. Egyptian public holidays, Eid and your own national holidays will not always line up. During Ramadan, working hours in Egypt are often shorter or shifted, so plan releases and deadlines with that in mind. None of this is difficult. It only causes friction when nobody talked about it in advance.

Communication habits that make a remote team in Egypt work

Most problems in remote teams are not about skill. They are about information not reaching the right person at the right time. A few habits solve most of it:

  • Write things down. Decisions, requirements and changes should live in your project tool, not only in a call that half the team missed.
  • Keep a short daily check-in. Fifteen minutes on camera does more for trust than a long weekly meeting.
  • Make it easy to ask questions. A shared chat channel where no question is too small prevents days of work going in the wrong direction.
  • Define “done”. Agree what finished looks like for a task, including testing and review, so nobody is guessing.
  • Give feedback early and often. Small corrections in week one are far easier than big ones in month three.

Culture: what to expect and how to work with it

Egyptian professionals are generally warm, hospitable and keen to do well. English is widely used in business, and many people in tech and digital roles are comfortable working in both English and Arabic, which is a real advantage if you serve customers in the Gulf.

Like people anywhere, some team members may be polite to a fault when they disagree, especially with a new manager. If you want pushback, say so clearly and reward it when it happens. Ask open questions such as “what could go wrong with this plan?” rather than “is everything clear?”. You will get better answers.

Personal relationships matter too. A little time spent getting to know the team, remembering what they are working towards and celebrating good work goes a long way. Remote people who feel like part of the company behave like part of the company.

Make them part of your team, not a supplier

The teams that work best are the ones that are treated as colleagues rather than a vendor at the end of an email. In practice:

  1. Invite them to company meetings and include them in announcements.
  2. Give them the same tools, access and documentation as your in-house staff.
  3. Pair each new person with someone on your side for their first weeks.
  4. Visit Cairo when you can, or bring key people to your office for a few days. One visit can change a relationship.

This is exactly why our model is built the way it is. You interview and approve every hire, they work under your direction, and your team can be remote, based in our Cairo office, or on-site with you. You can read the full picture of how it works, from the first call to a team that is up and running.

The role of your account manager

Day-to-day work runs between you and your team. Everything around it runs through one named account manager: onboarding, equipment, HR questions, leave, performance concerns and any change in team size. Having one person to call keeps small issues small and means you are never chasing answers across departments.

How good is English in Egypt?

English is widely used in business and is standard in tech roles. You interview every candidate yourself, so you can judge communication skills directly.
